Regular and Substantive Interaction in Online Courses
Active Teaching, Timely Feedback, and Meaningful Engagement
Park’s RSI Requirements for Online Courses
Park’s expectations for online instructors are aligned with the federal requirements for “regular and substantive interaction” (RSI) that the Department of Education and our institutional accreditor, the Higher Learning Commission, require for distance education and courses for which students may use Title IV funds (federal financial aid).

Discussions
An instructor-moderated online discussion with evidence of instructor participation multiple days a week.

Anouncements
Course announcements addressing difficult concepts, summarizing class progress, or offering additional, course-specific resources posted regularly throughout the term.

Feedback
Individualized or group feedback given early enough and with sufficient frequency for students to correct misunderstandings and deepen comprehension while the course is in progress.
Evidence of special effort to communicate with struggling students as they are likely to benefit from early intervention.

Group Activities
Use of small working/study groups that are moderated by the instructor.
